We want our students to understand the impact of colonization on First Nations communities. Importantly, students need to see the connection between colonization and the issues that modern day First Nations men and women face. Despite the pain and suffering of the residential school system, it is important for our students to learn that it’s crucial we find a way forward, a way to heal. There must be steps taken to hear the truth, feel the hurt, soothe the heart and be able to greet tomorrow.
We took 49 grade 6/7 students from Vancouver, BC to Chemainus in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. We spent 4 days learning about First Nations culture, specifically the impact of colonization and residential schools.
